Jonathan Edelstein has discussed civil liberties violations in the war on drugs such as subcontracting torture and legitimizing abductions of foreign nationals. As Jonathan noted in both posts, this foreshadows some of the tactics that America is using in the new war on terrorism.
This is an angle that I am extremely interested in and hope to follow up on, inshallah. My initial search with Google turned up two articles that provide a good overview. Unfortunately, both articles are over ten years old. Hopefully, I will be able to find some more recent articles this weekend! These articles are both very long and I haven't had time to read them fully myself but I'm providing links here for those who are interested: A Society of Suspects and The Bill of Rights: A Casualty of the War on Drugs?.
I also found an article that details the use of the U.S. military in the drug war.
